First, you should be familiar with how Ebay works. Knowing how Ebay works will help you list your items faster, and it will help you keep from getting negative ratings. If you have never used Ebay before, I suggest signing up and selling a few items before starting a business.

It’s also a good idea to purchase a few small items through Ebay before starting an eBay business. This will let you know how it is on the other side which is important because only by being a customer can you know what your customers expect from you.

Second, you are going to need to know what to specialize in. It should be based on a subject that you know something about. For instance, don’t start an Ebay business that specializes in Persian Rugs if you don’t know anything about Persian Rugs. This is a common mistake that people make when they are learning how to start an Ebay business.

You should know about what you are selling. This will keep you from overpaying for inventory, find the right suppliers and it will allow you to be able to accurately describe your product to your customers.

Third, you should know how you are going to source the inventory. You should be able to know where you can buy your good and resell them for a profit. Sometimes you can buy them from a wholesaler, and sometimes you can even buy them from Ebay itself. (Yes, you can buy on Ebay and resell on Ebay for a profit.)

It’s best to have more than one source of inventory. That way, if a source is cut off from you, you will still have a way to get stuff to sell. Selling stock that you can replenish easily makes for easier ebaying.

For example if you find 1 hot product, you write a description and take quality photos only once then use something like Selling Manager Pro to automatically relist your items. Automation is one of the Big Keys to Success!

Fourth, you should follow good business practices. Make sure you describe items accurately, and ship them when you say you are going to ship them. After a customer purchases an item, send them a short note thanking them. An unhappy customer will give you a negative rating, and if you get too many negative ratings your business will not have a chance to succeed.

Being consistent with your customer service, listings and learning the right techniques will make your eBay business experience rather pleasant. I don't know about you - but I enjoy making sales (profits) whilst I sleep.

Know that learning how to start an Ebay business is just like any other business. There is no set and forget button, you need to make yourself available to answer questions about the item, and communicate with the customer about your shipping policies. It takes work to start and keep a successful Ebay business.
